In the process, she drops the charm of her treasured key holder that she wears on her waist. Tei is headed for a unit in a multi- tenant building in Kinshicho. When Yoko enters the room, a man is deep in sleep on a sofa. Tei tells her, “This is my father. Don’t wake him up.” She begins a microwaved meal as she listens to hard rock by herself. Hearing from Tei that she has no mother, Yoko is angered that Tabito leaves his daughter to her own devices and forces him to wake up. Tabito rouses, but cannot follow Yoko’s words as she rapidly talks on and on. However, he notices only the hook of the holder on her waist. The next day, Yoko is summoned by Tei and finds Tabito and Yukiji crouching down on the road. Tabito tells her that he will find the key holder immediately. Tabito explains that he can see “patterns of emotion”. When he does not answer Yoko’s questions and walks away quickly, she mutters whether he cannot hear her. Yukiji confirms that she is correct. Yoko is told by Yukiji that Tabito does not even know the sense of smell, taste and touch. He senses everything with his eyes and sure enough Tabito locates Yoko’s keyholder charm in a park’s pond. However, Yukiji reminds Tabito to stop searching for things outside of work. ![]() Although Yoko does not believe in Tabito’s ability, she is concerned about Tei and Tabito. She barges into the office and meddles in their affairs, and witnesses his astonishing ability firsthand. However, Tabito collapses as a result of overusing his eyes. Enoki tells him that he will lose his sight if this goes on.

An MRI scan of the human brain. Photo by Katie Nesling/Thinkstock. In a brain that people love to describe as “awash with chemicals,” one chemical always seems to stand out. Dopamine: the molecule behind all our most sinful behaviors and secret cravings. Dopamine is motivation. Dopamine is attention. Dopamine is addiction. My, dopamine’s been busy. Dopamine is the one neurotransmitter that everyone seems to know about. The Marie Claire guide to your sex life, your love life, relationships and everything in between. A beautiful wedding blog full of inspiration for brides and those planning a wedding. Vaughn Bell once called it the Kim Kardashian of molecules, but I don’t think that’s fair to dopamine. Suffice it to say, dopamine’s big. And every week or so, you’ll see a new article come out all about dopamine. So is dopamine your cupcake addiction? The reality is dopamine has something to do with all of these. But it is none of them. Dopamine is a chemical in your body. But that doesn’t make it simple. What is dopamine? Dopamine is one of the chemical signals that pass information from one neuron to the next in the tiny spaces between them. When it is released from the first neuron, it floats into the space (the synapse) between the two neurons, and it bumps against receptors for it on the other side that then send a signal down the receiving neuron. That sounds very simple, but when you scale it up from a single pair of neurons to the vast networks in your brain, it quickly becomes complex. The effects of dopamine release depend on where it’s coming from, where the receiving neurons are going and what type of neurons they are, what receptors are binding the dopamine (there are five known types), and what role both the releasing and receiving neurons are playing. And dopamine is busy! It’s involved in many different important pathways. But when most people talk about dopamine, particularly when they talk about motivation, addiction, attention, or lust, they are talking about the dopamine pathway known as the mesolimbic pathway, which starts with cells in the ventral tegmental area, buried deep in the middle of the brain, which send their projections out to places like the nucleus accumbens and the cortex. Increases in dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens occur in response to sex, drugs, and rock and roll. And dopamine signaling in this area is changed during the course of drug addiction. ![]() Really, dopamine is signaling feedback for predicted rewards. If you, say, have learned to associate a cue (like a crack pipe) with a hit of crack, you will start getting increases in dopamine in the nucleus accumbens in response to the sight of the pipe, as your brain predicts the reward. But if you then don’t get your hit, well, then dopamine can decrease, and that’s not a good feeling. So you’d think that maybe dopamine predicts reward. But again, it gets more complex. For example, dopamine can increase in the nucleus accumbens in people with post- traumatic stress disorder when they are experiencing heightened vigilance and paranoia. So you might say, in this brain area at least, dopamine isn’t addiction or reward or fear. Instead, it’s what we call salience. Salience is more than attention: It’s a sign of something that needs to be paid attention to, something that stands out. This may be part of the mesolimbic role in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and also a part of its role in addiction. But dopamine itself? It has far more roles in the brain to play. For example, dopamine plays a big role in starting movement, and the destruction of dopamine neurons in an area of the brain called the substantia nigra is what produces the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Dopamine also plays an important role as a hormone, inhibiting prolactin to stop the release of breast milk. Back in the mesolimbic pathway, dopamine can play a role in psychosis, and many antipsychotics for treatment of schizophrenia target dopamine. Dopamine is involved in the frontal cortex in executive functions like attention. In the rest of the body, dopamine is involved in nausea, in kidney function, and in heart function. With all of these wonderful, interesting things that dopamine does, it gets my goat to see dopamine simplified to things like “attention” or “addiction.” After all, it’s so easy to say “dopamine is X” and call it a day. You feel like you know the truth at some fundamental biological level, and that’s that. And there are always enough studies out there showing the role of dopamine in X to leave you convinced. But simplifying dopamine, or any chemical in the brain, down to a single action or result gives people a false picture of what it is and what it does. If you think that dopamine is motivation, then more must be better, right? Because if dopamine is also “pleasure” or “high,” then too much is far too much of a good thing. If you think of dopamine as only being about pleasure or only being about attention, you’ll end up with a false idea of some of the problems involving dopamine, like drug addiction or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and you’ll end up with false ideas of how to fix them. The other reason I don’t like the “dopamine is” craze is because the simplification takes away the wonder of dopamine. If you believe “dopamine is,” then you’d think that we’ve got it all figured out. You begin to wonder why we haven’t solved this addiction problem yet. Complexity means that the diseases associated with dopamine (or with any other chemical or part of the brain, for that matter) are often difficult to understand and even more difficult to treat. By emphasizing dopamine’s complexity, it might feel like I’m taking away some of the glamour, the sexiness, of dopamine. The complexity of how a neurotransmitter behaves is what makes it wonderful. The simplicity of a single molecule and its receptors is what makes dopamine so flexible and what allows the resulting systems to be so complex. And it’s not just dopamine. While dopamine has just five receptor type, another neurotransmitter, serotonin, has 1. Other neurotransmitters have receptors with different subtypes, all expressed in different places, and where each combination can produce a different result. There are many types of neurons, and they make billions and billions of connections. And all of this so you can walk, talk, eat, fall in love, get married, get divorced, get addicted to cocaine, and come out on top of your addiction some day. When you think of the sheer number of connections required simply for you to read and understand this sentence—from eyes to brain, to processing, to understanding, to movement as your fingers scroll down the page—you begin to feel a sense of awe. Our brain does all this, even while it makes us think about pepperoni pizza and what that text your crush sent really means. Complexity makes the brain the fascinating and mind- boggling thing that it is. So dopamine has to do with addiction, whether to cupcakes or cocaine. It has to do with lust and love. It has to do with milk. It has to do with movement, motivation, attention, psychosis. Dopamine plays a role in all of these. But it is none of them, and we shouldn’t want it to be. Its complexity is what makes it great. It shows us what, with a single molecule, the brain can do. San Antonio Wheelmen. International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Adopted and opened for signature, ratification and accession by General Assembly resolution. Covenant Definition and Meaning - Bible Dictionary. Covenant. It presupposes two or more parties who come together to make a contract, agreeing on promises, stipulations, privileges, and responsibilities. In religious and theological circles there has not been agreement on precisely what is to be understood by the biblical term. It is used variously in biblical contexts. In political situations, it can be translated treaty; in a social setting, it means a lifelong friendship agreement; or it can refer to a marriage. The biblical words most often translated . The origin of the Old Testament word has been debated; some have said it comes from a custom of eating together ( Gen 2. The preferred meaning of this Old Testament word is bond; a covenant refers to two or more parties bound together. This idea of bond will be explicated more fully. The New Testament word for covenant has usually been translated as covenant, but testimony and testament have also been used. This Greek word basically means to order or dispose for oneself or another. The though of the inequality of the parties is latent. The generally accepted idea of binding or establishing a bond between two parties is supported by the use of the term berit . When Abimelech and Isaac decided to settle their land dispute, they made a binding agreement, league, or covenant to live in peace. An oath confirmed it ( Gen 2. Joshua and the Gibeonites bound themselves, by oath, to live in peace together ( Joshua 9: 1. Yahweh commanded that Israel was not to bind themselves to the people living in the land of Canaan ( Deut 7: 2 ; Judges 2: 2 ). Solomon and Hiram made a binding agreement to live and work in peace together ( 1 Kings 5: 1. A friendship bond was sealed by oath between David and Jonathan ( 1 Samuel 2. Samuel 2. 0: 1. 6- 1. Marriage is a bond (covenant) for life. The covenants referred to above were between two equal parties; this means that the covenant relationship was bilateral. The bond was sealed by both parties vowing, often by oath, that each, having equal privileges and responsibilities, would carry out their assigned roles. Because a covenant confirmed between two human parties was bilateral, some scholars have concluded that the covenant Yahweh established with human beings is also bilateral. God initiated, determined the elements, and confirmed his covenant with humanity. Persons are recipients, not contributors; they are not expected to offer elements to the bond; they are called to accept it as offered, to keep it as demanded, and to receive the results that God, by oath, assures will not be withheld. Scholars have learned by studying tablets found by archaeologists that legal treaties between kings (suzerains) and subjects (vassals) existed during the time of the biblical patriarchs, Moses, Joshua, the judges, and the first kings of Israel. These treaties were written on tablets for the purpose of establishing a continuing relationship as determined and authorized by the suzerain. Once written, the covenants were not to be altered or annulled although parts could be explicated or elaborated. Did biblical writers borrow the idea of the covenant and its integral elements from pagan sources when the Old Testament was writtenelements such as a self- presentation of the suzerain and his activities, including those done on behalf of the vassals, statements of intent, stipulations, and assurances of well- being if obedient and of curses if disobedient? The legal covenants included provisions for continuity, with emphasis on the suzerain's claim to vassals' children, and were confirmed by an oath or a special ratification ceremony, like the cutting in half of an ox or cow or the sharing of a meal as the conclusion of the act of covenanting. These nonbiblical covenants were intended to serve a number of purposes, two of which are especially important to understand. The suzerain stated that as victor and lord over the vassals he had spared them in battle, delivered them from extenuating circumstances, and placed them in situations of life and well- being. This was an undeserved favor. The suzerain's covenant was also intended to serve an administrative function. It informed the vassals how the king would govern them and what they were to do in obedient response to him. These two purposes, the reminder of deliverance and the information on administration of affairs in daily life, appear in Yahweh God's covenanting with his people but in radically different ways. Covenants, neither suzerain- vassal nor biblical, were not made (nor did they function) in a vacuum. Covenants presupposed a king, a domain, a way of life, people, and often mediating servants. The covenant was an important administrative means within a kingdom. Did biblical writers borrow from pagan sources when they wrote about Yahweh God's covenantal activities on behalf of and his relationships with his people? There is no reference of any kind in the Bible that this was done. There are marked similarities between biblical and the nonbiblical covenants. The most satisfactory and acceptable position is that Yahweh God is the source and originator of the entire covenant concept and phenomenon. He included the covenant relationship in his creation activity and handiwork. Covenant is germane to human life; it is God- implanted and - unfolded. Pagan kings gave concrete expression, in their proud and self- sufficient attitudes, to what Yahweh God had implanted and maintained within his created cosmos. This explanation calls for an answer to three important questions. When did Yahweh God first establish his covenant? What was the nature of that initial covenant? According to biblical revelation, did Yahweh God, after the initial one, establish any more covenants? The Old Testament. The Hebrew word for covenant does not appear in Genesis 1- 5. Some scholars say that this is evidence that there was no covenant in humankind's earliest history. Some say that the idea of covenant arose initially in the minds of the Israelites after they had been at Mount Sinai. To account for references to the covenant in the Noahic and patriarchal accounts, scholars have incorrectly said that later editors of Genesis inserted the idea of covenant to give historical evidence and credence to what Israel later believed. Other scholars, who accept Genesis as a record of Yahweh's revelation, also have difficulty accepting that God established his covenant when he created the cosmos mainly because of the lack of direct verbal reference to it. Biblical testimony points to the fact that God covenanted when he created. Hosea ( 6: 7 ) refers to Adam breaking the covenant. Jeremiah spoke of the covenant of the day and the night that no one can alter ( 3. God separated light from darkness and gave the sun and moon their appointed place and role ( Genesis 1: 3- 5. Genesis 1: 1. 4 ). When Yahweh God first spoke to Noah, he said he was going to wipe humankind from the face of the earth ( Gen 6: 7 ). But he assured Noah he would uphold and cause his covenant to continue. Hence Noah did not have to fear that God's plan for and method of administering his cosmic kingdom would be different after the flood. But why, if God covenanted when he created, is the word ? Those who wish to speak of only the covenant of grace, referred to briefly and indirectly in the Noahic account (Gen. Yahweh God promised victory through the woman's seed ( Gen 3: 1. When Yahweh God covenanted with David, according to 2 Samuel 7, the term . As the elements included in covenant were present in the account of the covenanting with David ( 2 Sam 7 ), so the elements constituting covenant are recorded in Genesis 1- 2. The basic elements of a covenant are imbedded in the Genesis account. God, in his revelation of creation, presented himself as the Creator. The historical record of what he has done was outlined. He created his image- bearers by means of which he placed and kept man and woman in a close relationship with himself and had them mirror (reflect) and represent him within the created cosmos. Humanity was given stipulations or mandates. As image- bearers they were to maintain an intimate and obedient fellowship with their Creator; the Sabbath was to enhance this. Humanity was to be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth; this was to be done by establishing families; a man was to leave his parents and cleave to his wife ( Gen 2: 2. Becoming one flesh, they would have children. As families increased, community would be formed. This social mandate thus was an integral aspect of covenant. So was the cultural mandate; man and woman were to cultivate (subdue NIV) and rule over the creation. When God saw all that he had done, he confirmed, not by expressing an oath or performing a ratifying ceremony, but by declaring all to be very good ( Gen 1: 3. This he confirmed by ceasing from creating activity and establishing the seventh day as a day of rest, sanctity, and blessing ( Gen 2: 1- 3 ). Yahweh God did more; he spoke of assured blessings. God blessed Adam and Eve; he thus gave them ability and authority to serve as his covenant agents. He provided for their sustenance ( Gen 1: 2. He also spoke of the possibility of disobedience, if they ate of the forbidden tree of knowledge of good and evil ( Gen 2: 1. The ideas of blessing (life) and curse (death) thus were also included. The forbidding of eating has been referred to as the probationary command but also as the integral aspect of . They doubted Yahweh's words; they accepted the lie. They broke the covenantal relationship between Yahweh and themselves. Creation was affected, for it too suffered the consequences of Adam and Eve's sin. It too began to groan ( Rom 8: 2. But Yahweh did not break his covenant with creation and his vicegerents. A Note from Fatty About Today’s Post: I’ve never been so disappointed to not be able to attend someone else’s 1. Miles of Nowhere as Don’s. I mean, just the sheer scope and planning that went into it makes my head spin. So I’m extremely pleased to present his 1. Miles of Nowhere race report. Or, as he calls it. It’s 1: 3. 0am by the time we make it back to Lebanon. Saturday I need to be at The Lebanon I- 4. Speedway by 7: 0. Myself and 6. 0+ friends are planning to ride 1. Miles of Nowhere on the track. A quick 2. 67 laps will tick the 1. Sunday I’m racing Hannah’s Hope Cross, another charity event, and my first cross race. At times I spread myself thin. I have over- commitment issues. I’ve entertained doing Fatty’s 1. Miles of Nowhere fundraiser in the past, but life always got in the way. This year I committed and searched for the right location, something interesting and crazy. A business associate is part owner of The Lebanon I- 4. Speedway, Missouri’s only NASCAR sanctioned race track. I thought it might be cool to do my race there and inquired. Yes! With use of the track secured, I mentioned my intent to a few cycling friends. Their interest was piqued, and I invited them to join the cause. Then a few more friends showed interest in joining me, I set up a Facebook event to see if others would like to join. They did. So many kind and generous people contributed to this event. It renewed my solid belief that the world is filled with good people. I was overwhelmed at the support and interest. The stars aligned well on Saturday, November 1. While it was brisk (3. I planned this day for over a month and was filled with nervous excitement. A few cars were sitting at the race track gate when I arrived a few minutes after 7: 0. I felt guilty for making them wait. We made haste to the pits and started setting up a couple of tables for waiver sign in and refuel stations. My friend Jonathan Graif was generous enough to provide a sound system and my wife Ronna would keep the motivational tunes coming. The music proved to be key entertainment. Something to break up the monotony of nearly 2. Ronna would go on to lead the paceline in a stirring rendition of “Let it Go” from the “Frozen” soundtrack. Trust me folks, that’s entertainment. The starting line was pretty amazing. The awesome volunteers. A drone pilot/photographer, a professional photographer, a local newspaper reporter, and 6. Some of the riders were on a mission. Their goal, ride the fastest 1. Others, they were there to enjoy the fun and contribute to a great cause. While I wanted my day to be challenging (hence the single speed drop bar mountain bike I was riding), I was more concerned about the other riders enjoying themselves and making sure the event was running smoothly. I delayed my start for 1. Once under way, I had a couple of light bulb moments – “It’s really cold!” – and – “This is going to be harder than I thought!” I had to keep this to myself as no one wants hear whining. More importantly, I had to finish my 1. How would it look – Don’s “4. Miles of Nowhere.” If I completed ANYTHING less than 1. I would be the subject of quiet murmurs and finger pointing at every future endurance cycling event. Failure was not an option. The infield feed zone had a killer support crew. That blonde in the middle hangs out at my house, ALL of the time. SPOILER ALERT: I finished my 1. I was not the first rider to complete 1. Not even close. However, I was not last. Although I was much closer to last than first. Ok, I was. I visited with the riders, thanking each for attending. I found inspiration in the riders, and want to share some of that inspiration. Scott Sifferman, aka “The Judge”Scott’s nicknamed “The Judge” for good reason, (he’s an Associate Circuit Judge), and a “seasoned” cyclist. By seasoned, I mean he remembers when JFK was POTUS. By seasoned, I mean he regularly finds himself on a podium at state level Masters TT events. He’s a tour de force. Scott proved his mettle at 1. Miles of Nowhere, cranking out a phenomenal century, battling second place recumbent rider, Dennis Grelk. I was, and am in awe. Scott’s finish time – 4: 0. Nessa Johnson. In the final hour of my ride I watched the track slowly empty. The party was drawing to an end. It made me a little sad. I finished up, then stopped by the feed zone and thanked my friends for hanging around until I finished. There were still (2) riders on the track. One of the riders was Nessa Johnson. I spoke with Nessa earlier, she said 3. I told her I would stay until dark if she wanted to try to complete the 1. I feel like that took a bit of pressure off. I rode back to Nessa and asked how she was doing. She was tired, but really wanted to finish her new goal of 7. She was close, and I continued riding in support. Nessa and her husband travelled from Topeka, KS to attend the event. Her perseverance lifted my mood.?? She finished her new personal best of 7. She doubled her previous best and then some. Nessa, great job! You inspired me. Charles Elmore. Charles, a Lebanon MO resident, was the other rider on the track as I finished up. Charles tells me he’s battled the 1. I inform him this day is different. This is the day he completes his first 1. Charles is still riding strong. With (1) lap to go, my amazing finish line crew constructs a finish line tape of toilet paper. With his family looking on, Charles breaks the tape, finishing his first 1. If that fails to inspire you, check your pulse. Charles, well done. You inspired me. Next Year. Next year is already in the planning and I’m confident we can double this crowd of amazing cyclists.? Comments (2. 8)1. As you’ve probably noticed, I am not one of those people. Which is why I put on a ridiculous virtual event: the 1. Miles of Nowhere. What amazes and inspires me is that some people take my silly fake event and turn it into an awesome real event. For example, did you know the 1. Miles to Nowhere (Dobson Ranch Edition) is a real event, and has been going for seven years now? They raised nearly $1. Cardon’s Pediatric Oncology Program this year. I wish I could have been there. It sounds that cool. |
